Has Hollywood gone to Gerard Butler's head? Actor looks more California surfer than Scottish star with long blonde locks

By Daily Mail Reporter

California Boy: Scottish actor Gerard Butler stepped out for lunch in West Hollywood yesterday with longer, blonder hair

His gravelly Scottish accent, dishevelled beard and dark hair have made Gerard Butler one of Europe's hottest exports.

But the actor was barely recognisable as he stepped out for lunch in West Hollywood yesterday.

Gerard has been sporting longer hair in recent months after years of the same cropped style, but now the 300 star appears to have had his hair lightened to a dark blonde shade.

Whether living in the harsh California sun has naturally bleached the 41-year-old's locks or he has let Hollywood go to his head - literally - is unknown.

In recent years the actor's dark brunette hair has been looking slightly more silver fox, so it may be that the vanity of showbusiness is playing on the Scotsman's mind.

Gerard was casual in aviator sunglasses, a number 79 T-shirt and cargo trousers and chatted on his hands-free device as he walked down the street.

He has just returned from the Berlin film festival, where he attended the premiere of his latest movie Coriolanus, directed by Ralph Fiennes.

Brunette to blonde: The 300 star is barely recognisable from his usual groomed style, as at the Bounty Hunter premiere last year

His new look could be his upcoming role in a new comedy Playing The Field, in which he stars as 'a former professional athlete with a weak past who tries to redeem himself by coaching his son's soccer team, only to find himself unable to resist his players' restless and gorgeous moms,' according to IMDB.com.

Gerard has also just completed filming on two films to be releases this year, Machine Gun Preacher and Movie 43.

The former is the true story of Sam Childers,a former drug-dealing biker who became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who've been forced to become soldiers.

Movie 43 is an ensemble comedy of short stories starring a host of big names including Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Anna Faris, Kristen Bell, Emma Stone, Jush Duhamel and Richard Gere.

Naomi Watts, Sean William Scott, Elizabeth Banks and Uma Thurman also star.

Gerard has just announced he will reprise his role in the animated children's film How to Train Your Dragon, which is nominated for best animated feature at this month' Academy Awards.
