It seems there is very little to celebrate for Tom Cruise at the moment.
Even the monumental hurdle of turning half a century led the newly-separated star to ditch original festivities planned to take place in New York, resulting in a 'sombre' and 'very, very sad' day.
Instead, the Cocktail star quietly returned to Los Angeles, following a filming spell in Iceland, to spend time with adopted teenage children Connor and Isabella, from his marriage with ex Nicole Kidman.
Cancelled: Tom Cruise's original plans to celebrate his 50th birthday in New York with six-year-old Suri and estranged wife Katie were called off, as he spent a quiet day with his adopted children Isabella and Connor
Daddy's other little girl: Isabella also joined her embattled father for his birthday celebrations
The father-of-three was expecting friends and family - including estranged wife Katie Holmes and his only biological child Suri - to flock to him in the Big Apple where they lived in an apartment together.
However, after the Dawson's Creek actress made a shock decision to file divorce papers last Friday, the powerful king and queen of A-list stardom have now gone their separate ways.
A source told People: 'The plan was to spend his birthday with Katie and Suri (in New York City).
'Then they were going to fly to California where he is going to finish Oblivion and spend time there.'
Moving on: Katie took Suri out for ice-cream last night in an effort to prove they are moving on
Tom is said to be speaking to Suri 'several times a day' via phone though, according to the publication.
The actor has accused his soon to be ex-wife of using their daughter as a weapon.
According to TMZ, Katie is making it very difficult for Tom to see Suri.
The couple have 'absolutely no contact' with each other, with their representatives arguing over how and when Tom gets to contact the child.
While Tom is speaking to Suri via phone, he has not yet brought up the subject of the breakup with the six-year-old.
Sources say things are 'really bitter now' between Tom and Katie, and that the Mission: Impossible star feels betrayed by her.
They add that while Tom will not attempt to go and meet Suri any time soon, if Katie tries to block him when he does he will bring an army of lawyers.
Tom's 17-year-old son Connor meanwhile openly showed support for his father by tweeting this week: '#LaFamilia Always. Friends Come And Go, But Family Is Forever.'
According to People's insider: 'They were all together, and one of the reasons he came back to California was that he had to take his family back to LA (in the Burbank area).'
To dampen Cruise's spirits further, is has been reported that the air between the pair is turning sour as Katie's lawyers are said to have filed for an emergency custody and child support hearing in New York, which will see the pair come face to face for the first time since their split.
The 33-year-old has requested sole legal custody and primary physical custody of six-year-old Suri.
However, Katie seems to have been empowered by the move, venturing out for ice-cream with Suri last night with a smile painted on her face and telling reporters: 'I'm alright'.
A hearing on the filing, called an emergent application, has been set for July 17, reports Radar.
Last sighting: This is said to be the last picture of the couple together, taken in Iceland on June 16
