'We're not engaged any more': Max George and Michelle Keegan call off their wedding... but they are still together

By Kimberley Dadds

They've been dogged by rumours of a split pretty much ever since they got together and became engaged following their whirlwind romance.

And now it has emerged The Wanted's Max George and his soap star fiancee Michelle Keegan have in fact called off their wedding.

The singer announced he is no longer engaged on Ryan Seacrest's radio station KIIS FM earlier today.

When the presenter and his co-host Ellen K asked the 23-year-old about his relationship status, Ryan told Ellen that the star was engaged.

But, Max quickly corrected them and replied: 'No, no, no, not anymore.'

The station then posted the news on their breaking Twitter feed and wrote: 'BREAKING: @MaxTheWanted from @thewantedmusic is not engaged anymore! We’re chatting w/ him now listen live http://www.kiisfm.com.'

The line reportedly went dead after Max made the shocking announcement.

And the presenters seemed confused as to whether they had been cut off on purpose.

But Max quickly rejoined the conversation on air when he was then asked whether he was enjoying the benefits of being in a boyband.

He replied: 'Absolutely'.

Loved-up: Michelle gave Max a kiss and showed off her engagement ring shortly after he proposed last summer

A spokesperson for Michelle has confirmed to the Mail Online they have called off the engagement, but insisted they are still an item.

The rep said: 'They have recently called off their engagement, but they are still together.'

And Max has since taken to his Twitter page to clear up reports.

Clearing it all up: After his radio interview, Max took to Twitter to explain his comments, revealing he's still dating Michelle

He revealed the phone line accidentally went dead on the radio programme and he is still 'very much' with the actress.

Max wrote: 'Hey everyone, so just to clear up any rumours, me and Shell are still very much together, just there is no wedding. The call got cut off.... And made it sound much worse.'

But the pop star has certainly looked like he's been enjoying his time in the group during his trip to America.

Max has been surrounded by scantly clad female admirers during Spring Break concerts and even managed to mingle with Jennifer Lopez last week after they performed on American Idol.

Calming the relationship down: They became engaged last summer after a whirlwind six month relationship

He tweeted after the show: 'One of the best days of my life...thanks america!!'

And earlier this week he was also spotted filming his new music video.

He grinned widely as he had to cosy up to a number of models for the shoot.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street star Michelle, 24, has stayed put in England.

And she has posted a number of cryptic tweets on her Twitter page recently, which suggest she may have been venting about their halted engagement.

She wrote last night, just hours before he made the announcement: 'Can't sleep! Last thing I need right now...'

And earlier she added: 'There's some sly people in this world!'

The pair became engaged last year after just six months of dating.

But split rumours began circulating at the start of this year, when Michelle reportedly asked her singer beau for some 'space'.

Although she has since spoken out to slam the reports and a representative for her said at the time: 'The date had never been set. They are still very much a couple.'

It is not clear when they called off their wedding but it is thought they were still engaged about a month ago.
