Prayer vigil held for ailing Aretha Franklin as she prepares to undergo surgery

A community prayer vigil has been held in Detroit for singer Aretha Franklin who is set to undergo surgery.

The vigil comes a day before the singing legend is set to undergo a medical procedure for an undisclosed condition.

City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson and others gathered downtown Wednesday to pray for Franklin.

The news come a month after the 68-year-old singer announced she was cancelling all concert dates and personal appearances through May on the orders of her doctors.

Which came after she reportedly spent a week in Detroit's Sinai-Grace Hospital for a 'serious illness'.

Franklin wasn't at the vigil, but in a statement she thanked the City Council, saying 'all prayers are good'


Challenging time: Aretha has suffered some health problems since falling and breaking two ribs in September


The medical procedure is scheduled for later today. The details of her illness have not been made public.

The announcement comes at the end of a challenging year for the legendary singer.

In September, Franklin's second eldest son Edward Franklin was attacked by three assailants at a petrol station in Detroit.

A month earlier, Franklin had to cancel her dates with Condoleeza Rice on their joint tour after breaking two ribs in a fall.
